NCD Guide Malaysia 2026: How No Claim Discount Saves You Up to 55%

May 15, 20268 min read

The No Claim Discount (NCD) is one of the most powerful ways to save money on your car insurance in Malaysia. If you have been driving claim-free for years, you could be paying less than half of what a new driver pays for the exact same coverage.

What is NCD?

NCD, or No Claim Discount, is a reward system for safe drivers. For every consecutive year you drive without making an insurance claim, your insurer gives you a discount on your next renewal premium. The discount starts at 0% and increases each year until it reaches the maximum of 55% after 5 or more claim-free years.

Think of it as a loyalty and safety bonus rolled into one. The longer you go without an accident, the less you pay. A driver with 55% NCD on a RM 2,000 base premium saves RM 1,100 — paying only RM 900 per year.

Key NCD Rules Every Driver Should Know

1. NCD is Transferable Between Vehicles

When you sell your car, your NCD does not disappear — it travels with you to your new car. As long as you remain the policyholder, you can transfer your accumulated NCD to any vehicle you own. This is one of the most valuable features of the NCD system.

2. NCD Resets After a Claim

If you make a claim on your insurance, your NCD drops to 0% at the next renewal. This is why many drivers choose to pay for minor repairs out of pocket rather than making a claim that would reset years of accumulated NCD. The math is simple: if the repair costs less than your NCD savings over the next few years, pay out of pocket.

3. Windscreen Claims Usually Do NOT Affect NCD

If you have windscreen cover as an add-on, windscreen claims typically do not affect your NCD. This is because windscreen cover is a separate add-on with its own premium calculation. However, always confirm with your insurer as policies vary.

4. NCD Cannot Be Transferred Between People

NCD belongs to the policyholder, not the vehicle. You cannot transfer your NCD to your spouse, child, or friend. When a car is sold, the new owner starts with 0% NCD on that vehicle.

5. Grace Period for Late Renewal

Most insurers offer a 12-month grace period. If you renew your insurance within 12 months of expiry, your NCD is usually retained. After 12 months, you risk losing it entirely.

Should You Make a Claim or Pay Out of Pocket?

This is the million-ringgit question. Here is a simple rule of thumb:

The NCD Claim Math

If the repair cost is LESS than your NCD savings over the next 3-5 years, pay out of pocket. Your NCD will continue growing toward 55%. If the repair cost is significantly higher (e.g., major accident), make the claim — that is what insurance is for.
