How is Malaysian road tax calculated?
Road tax in Malaysia is calculated based on engine capacity (CC). The larger the engine, the higher the road tax. Rates differ for Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah/Sarawak, and between private and company-registered vehicles.
When do I need to renew my road tax?
Road tax must be renewed annually before it expires. You can renew up to 2 months before expiry. The expiry date is printed on your road tax sticker.
Is road tax cheaper in Sabah and Sarawak?
Yes — road tax rates in Sabah and Sarawak are generally lower than in Peninsular Malaysia, especially for vehicles with engine capacity above 1,000cc.
Can I renew road tax without insurance?
No. You must have valid car insurance before renewing road tax. The insurance policy must cover the full road tax period.
What about EV road tax?
As of 2026, EVs registered in Malaysia are exempt from road tax. However, a new road tax structure for EVs has been proposed — visit our EV Road Tax page for the latest details.
How do I check my road tax expiry date?
You can check via the JPJ MySikap portal, the MyJPJ app, or by looking at the road tax sticker on your windscreen.
