Road Tax Refund in Malaysia — Complete Guide

Learn when and how to claim your JPJ road tax refund, calculate how much you'll get back, and the full document checklist.

Quick Answer: Yes, you can get a road tax refund from JPJ. You'll get back the value of complete remaining months (current month not included). The refund process takes 4-8 weeks.

When Can You Claim a Road Tax Refund?

Selling your vehicle

Most common reason. Refund for remaining months.

Vehicle scrapped / written off

Need scrapping certificate from authorized facility.

Vehicle stolen (total loss)

Need police report and insurer's total loss confirmation.

Vehicle exported overseas

Need Customs export documentation.

Vehicle permanently off-road

Must surrender registration number.

Changed vehicle license plate

Road tax follows the vehicle, not the plate number.

Just want to stop using the car

Road tax is mandatory while you own a registered vehicle.

How Much Refund Will You Get?

JPJ calculates road tax refunds based on complete remaining months only. The current month is NOT refundable. Here's the formula:

Refund Formula

Refund = (Annual Road Tax ÷ 12) × Remaining Full Months

Step-by-Step Refund Process

  1. 1

    Calculate your expected refund

Use the formula above to estimate how much you'll get back. If the amount is very small (under RM 30), the trip to JPJ may not be worth your time.

  2. 2

    Prepare documents

Original road tax (digital copy is fine since digitalization), vehicle grant (VOC), IC copy, completed JPJ K8 form, bank statement for refund details.

  3. 3

    Get supporting documents

If selling: sale agreement or ownership transfer form. If scrapped: scrapping certificate. If stolen: police report + insurance total loss letter.

  4. 4

    Visit JPJ counter

Go to any JPJ branch. No need for an appointment. Bring original documents plus photocopies.

  5. 5

    Submit K8 form

The JPJ officer will verify your documents and process the K8 form. You'll receive an acknowledgement slip.

  6. 6

    Wait for refund

Refunds are typically processed within 4-8 weeks via bank transfer or cheque. Keep the acknowledgement slip.

Special Cases

Digital Road Tax

Since Malaysia moved to digital road tax, you no longer need a physical disc. Just provide your vehicle registration number and IC at JPJ.

Company Vehicles

For company-registered vehicles, you need the company's SSM registration, authorized signatory's IC, and a company letter authorizing the refund.

Road Tax + Insurance Same Time

If selling your car, cancel both insurance and road tax. You can claim refunds from both — insurer for insurance, JPJ for road tax.

Overpaid Road Tax

If you accidentally overpaid (e.g., renewed road tax twice), JPJ can refund the duplicate payment. Keep both receipts as proof.
